Tritons sweep Chokers in home openers

LYNNWOOD -- Edmonds College baseball opened the home slate with a sweep of Grays Harbor on Saturday. The Tritons won the first game 7-6, and the nightcap 5-1.

Evan Maury carried the offense in the first one with a 3-hit effort. Lathan Haywood shined in relief, hurling three frames, and closed out the back end of the game to collect the win. Chris Rogers registered two hits, and Logan Blank had a single that scored two in the sixth that gave the Tritons the lead for good.

Edmonds (4-1) got ahead early in the second game, scoring on an illegal pitch and a balk in the second and third innings. Grays Harbor (1-5) added one run in the fourth but the Tritons added three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Evan Maury went back to work smacking an opposite field double that plated two. Michael Snyder's sac fly pushed the score to 5-1.

Lefty starter Sheldon Egger (1-0) went seven innings, allowing just one run, scattering four hits and fanning seven. In the top of the sixth, with runners at first and second, Egger bowed his neck and struck out two in a row, before getting a lineout to end the threat. Peter Herrick worked the final two innings.

The two teams are set to finish their four-game set on Sunday at noon. There are showers in the forecast. Make sure to follow Triton Athletics on social media @EdmondsTritons for updates.
