Boonsripisal's PK lifts Edmonds women over Whatcom

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Edmonds College (5-3-1, 2-2-1) secured a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Whatcom Community College (6-2-2, 3-2-1) on Saturday at Triton Field. The decisive goal came in the second half, with the Tritons' defense maintaining a shutout as their goalkeeper recorded three saves.

The first half began with Edmonds establishing its presence early, as Philicidy Lee tested Whatcom's goalkeeper Kaylee Davis with a shot in the second minute. Despite consistent offensive pressure, including a Ryden Powers shot that struck the crossbar at the 15-minute mark and several saves by Davis, the Tritons were unable to convert their chances.

Amaris Ishikawa stood firm in goal for Edmonds, making key saves to maintain a scoreless draw. Milina Mazon and Haylie Thomas also challenged Davis, but the Whatcom goalkeeper denied each attempt. The half closed with both teams locked in a 0-0 tie, as Edmonds continued to seek a breakthrough.

The second half commenced with Edmonds maintaining a strong defensive posture while seeking opportunities to break the deadlock. After a series of fouls and an offside call, the Tritons began to press forward, utilizing corner kicks to generate scoring chances. Haylie Thomas and Saige Palazzotto each tested the Whatcom goalkeeper, Kaylee Davis, who made crucial saves to keep the score level.

Momentum shifted in the 81st minute when Aliya Boonsripisal converted a penalty kick, giving the Tritons a 1-0 lead. Despite Whatcom's attempts to respond, including a saved shot by Ishikawa, Edmonds held firm defensively. The half concluded with the Tritons preserving their narrow advantage, closing the match with a 1-0 victory.

The match between Edmonds and Whatcom began with both teams displaying strong defensive efforts in the first half, resulting in a 0-0 scoreline. Edmonds' Philicidy Lee and Ryden Powers threatened the Whatcom defense early, with Lee's shot saved by goalkeeper Kaylee Davis and Powers hitting the crossbar. Whatcom's Emilee Swanson and Mali Bowler tested Ishikawa in goal, but Ishikawa made crucial saves to deny both attempts. The half saw multiple fouls and a yellow card issued to Lee, while both teams capitalized on corner kick opportunities without converting them into goals.

Boonsripisal scored the game's only goal for Edmonds, which was also the game-winner. Ishikawa played the full 90 minutes in goal, recording three saves to secure a shutout. Palazzotto contributed two shots, both of which were on target, providing offensive pressure from the defensive line.

Edmonds improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play. Whatcom fell to 6-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.

The next challenge for the Tritons will be against Shoreline at home on October 1. The match is set to kick off at 4:15 p.m.
